Carlsbad police investigated the death of a 22-year-old Eduardo Otero Jr. Sunday night near Cruz Hernandez Park, according to Carlsbad Police Department Assistant Police Chief Jaime Balencia.
He said officers responded to calls of shots fired in a neighborhood near the park around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
During the investigation, officers found a vehicle at the end of Mesquite Street and discovered an open door on the passenger side.
He said officers found Otero, who was later transported to Carlsbad Medical Center and pronounced dead.

He said Otero received multiple gunshots and police do not have any potential suspects.
“We don’t have a whole lot of leads,” Balencia said.

He said police were looking into Otero’s background to see if any potential leads might be developed.
“We’re trying to follow up and see what we can get,” Balencia said.
He said witnesses heard around six shots and another vehicle allegedly left the area after the shooting.
Anyone with potential information was asked to contact Carlsbad Police at 575-885-2111.
Balencia said the investigation of Otero’s death was ongoing.
