Congratulations to the Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity basketball team, who moved its record to 4-0 with a 42-30 weekend win over El Paso Riverside in the finals of the City of Champions Classic in Artesia. The Cavegirls have now won the tournament for the past three years. The Cavegirls also hosted Santa Teresa on Monday night.
The Carlsbad Cavemen scored their first varsity basketball win of the season. The Cavemen beat Artesia, 55-45, in the seventh place game of the tournament. The Cavemen will host Gadsden on Tuesday night. We also appreciate Current-Argus reporter Mike Smith for his coverage of local basketball games.
We had a great time at Carlsbad Community Theatre’s annual production- “Every Christmas Story Ever Told and then Some” which is directed by Dianne Joop and Barbara Hodgson. The production starred Levi Dominguez, Robert Reid and Shawna Frederick, with Dave Kump serving as technical director. The performance continues next week and tickets can be purchased at www.carlsbadcommunitytheatre.com
Upcoming community theatre productions include “The Cemetery Club” and “Murders in the Heir.” Thanks to everyone in our theatre community for working so hard to provide arts in Carlsbad. Carlsbad Caverns National Park also had a great debut of its “Rock of Ages” event at the Caverns. Thank you to Carmen Chapin and everyone at the national park for providing returning this very special feature to the program.
We offer our condolences to several very dedicated community members who passed away over the last few days.
Pastor Albert Alvarez was one of the leaders at Oasis Christian Church in Carlsbad. You will never meet a person more dedicated to his faith, and he was especially devoted to ministry work at prisons and jails. We have heard so many powerful testimonials from people about how Pastor Albert inspired their own faith. Oasis Church has also been one of our best partners in returning the prayer breakfast to Carlsbad and at other community events. Funeral services are pending.
Brenda Jones had a career in health care in Carlsbad. She owned and operated Home Care Connection & Hospice until 2013. She was a docent at the Living Desert and volunteered at First United Methodist Church. She and her family members are all very active members of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. Brenda’s funeral services were held on Monday.
Both Pastor Albert and Brenda will be greatly missed.
