Williamson was among 22 spellers competing in this year’s bee held at P.R. Leyva Middle School’s auditorium.
When fellow speller Jose Sanchez, a student at Ocotillo Elementary, misspelled “tenent,” Williamson spelled it correctly to earn the chance at the title.
Sanchez was awarded second place and Benjamin Jang, a student at P.R. Leyva, was awarded third place. Jang misspelled “exhilaration” and was eliminated from the final round of the bee.
Over 160 words were issued to spellers during the bee.
Judges for this year’s bee were Lesley Galyas, Keely Scruggs and Heather Counts.
Williamson will go on the participate in the regional spelling bee in El Paso, Texas in March.
