New Mexico’s GOP candidate for governor Mark Ronchetti will host a campaign rally in Carlsbad Sunday headlined by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“I’m honored to have Governor DeSantis help us fire up our Ronchetti team in New Mexico,” Ronchetti said.
“Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has failed New Mexico. Whether it’s crime, where we’re now the 2nd most violent state in the country, or on the economy, with high prices killing family budgets, New Mexicans are ready for change. Governor DeSantis is a premier leader on the national stage, and I’m honored by his support and his interest in visiting our beautiful land of enchantment.”
Opinion:Ronchetti race shows Trump loyalty is a small factor in New Mexico
New Mexico Political Report had Ronchetti narrowly behind incumbent Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, pointing to a poll by Public Policy Polling showing New Mexicans were not sold on stricter abortion rights measures or immigration policies.
DeSantis, elected Florida’s governor in 2018, previously served as its Sixth District Congressional Representative. DeSantis will seek another term for the gubernatorial seat, though politicos suggested he may seek a spot on the 2024 presidential ticket.
DeSantis, a Navy veteran and vocal support of President Donald Trump, is known for his ultra-conservative leadership of Florida including outspoken opposition to critical race theory, climate change, COVID-19 restrictions and President Joe Biden’s immigration and economic policies.
Opinion: Is Ronchetti ready?
DeSantis recently signed a Florida law prohibiting the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation in schools, and recently made headlines when he suspended an elected Florida prosecutor who said he supported gender transition for minors and would not enforce the state’s abortion ban.
New Mexico’s only Republican Congressional member Yvette Herrell, who represents District 2, is also expected to be in attendance.
Herrell is seeking re-election to her District 2 seat. Redrawn boundaries stretched District 2 into northern New Mexico counties with fewer conservative voters and larger numbers of registered Democrats, a move the state Republican party said at the time was meant to dilute the Republicans’ long-standing stronghold in the southeast and southern counties.
The rally is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center. Doors will open at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the public are free and can be requested by visiting www.markronchetti.com.
The Democratic Party of New Mexico, in a news release this week, called the rally an effort to “save flailing campaigns” for Ronchetti and Herrell.
“By campaigning with Ron DeSantis, Mark Ronchetti and Yvette Herrell have said the quiet part out loud: they fully intend to bring extreme Trump policies here to New Mexico,” said DPNM Communications Director Daniel Garcia.
“The Trump-DeSantis agenda would devastate New Mexico’s schools, undermine the state’s Democratic process, punish women and doctors for seeking and providing abortion care, and promote policies that benefit the wealthy and powerful at the expense of New Mexico’s hardworking families and rural communities.”
